13 Reasons Why. For parents of tweens and teens.
The new Netflix craze: 13 Reasons Why is getting a lot of response. Some think it’s abominable and sensationalized and glorifies suicide. Others think it’s integral to changing the mindset of society and useful for inspiring kindness.
I’ve written a series of discussion questions for each episode. The questions analyze the production of the show as well as posing questions for parents and teens to discuss the issues that arise. The format is meant to touch on difficult topics in the context of a TV show analysis (a lot like a book group discussion). This is an excellent opportunity to have important, and challenging, conversations with our kids about topics that are hard to raise out of the blue. This series touches on all of the topics that we should be talking with our kids about, but often we avoid out of discomfort.
I recommend watching each episode with your kid (or at least watch them yourself if your child is, or has, watching this show). Use the discussion questions to prompt conversation. Or consider getting a group of kids and their parents together to discuss the show.
If you have Netflix, you’re kids are probably watching it. At the very least, watch it yourself and ask your child his/her thoughts. Invite conversation.
Private message me if you’d like a copy of the questions I’ve prepared, or if you’d like me to lead the discussion for a group in your community.
