Have an AR (Automated Response)
How many times have you answered your kids’ requests with a yes (or “FINE!”), when later (after thinking it through) you realized your answer should have been no? Or the reverse, said no when it really could have been a yes? Oftentimes, we are in the middle of something when our children make requests and we don’t have time or energy to think through the ramifications of the request before we answer. My suggestion to you: have an automated response that means, “I hear you, I will consider your request, and I will let you know my answer later.”
Mine was: “I’ll think about it.” They knew it didn’t mean yes or no, but that I really would think it over and let them know my answer and possibly a short explanation of why I answered that way. Make sure to get back to your child as soon as possible so he won’t badger you about it and so he knows you are a person of your word.
