Summertime!

The perfect opportunity to learn about life through gardening. Give your kids their own little plot of land (maybe 3 x 3 ft) and let them have at it. Give them some flower seeds, a couple of vegetables, a trowel and a watering can.

Giving the children their own garden spaces allows them to learn about the cycle of life and how to care for living things. It gives them a sense of accomplishment and teaches them natural consequences. It’s also an activity you can bond through and ALSO allows you to let them “help” you while not wrecking your hard work by pulling the wrong “weed” or stomping on your seedlings.

So often we shoo our kids away from helping us with projects because having their help seems to end up making more work for us. The way to compromise is to give them their own work space near us or give a specific part of the task (rinsing the dishes and putting them in the drainer; holding the dustpan; putting the pillowcases on the pillows; mixing up the fruit for the fuit salad, etc.)

Kids learn about the world by “helping” us. If we don’t let them in on the projects, how will they know how to take care of these things themselves one day? Besides, these are good opportunities for conversation and sharing of dreams and ideas. Before long you’ll have to beg them for help. Start setting the precedent now.
