Funny how when we aren’t happy with our life circumstances we seek to comfort ourselves with things that only make our situation worse. We justify our bad decisions with excuses, “but I’m so depressed and the planet’s probably going to be destroyed anyway so I might as well eat this entire carrot cake and call in sick today. Besides, I feel kind of sick. I think I’ve got a migraine.”
As a life coach I encounter people who have let the excuses and self-comforting get out of control and my job is to help them find a reason to grab the reigns again. I find it helps to remember the times in our lives when we were the happiest. Often it is when we were falling in love. When you’re falling in love you tend to have a lot of willpower. You get out of the house, you try new experiences, you want to feel your best and look your best; you feel hopeful and inspired and courageous.
When you were your happiest, how were you different from how you are today? Do you remember how you felt about yourself? Can you incorporate some, or all, of those things back into your life? Be creative and innovative. Stop making excuses for wasting the precious gift of life. You’ll never be younger than you are today.
For me, I’m incorporating more hikes in nature, more weekends away from home, more vegetable soup and kale smoothies, more public speaking (terrifies me), and more faking confidence. What about you?
