The best way we can teach our children how to behave and to be nice is to be a good role model.
When talking to our children, it can be helpful to imagine ourselves speaking to our most favorite people: a best friend, a favorite aunt, a beloved grandma… and make sure that we are using the same kind of language with our kids that we would use with our dear friends.
Instead of “You are always fighting with your siblings, why can’t you just get along?” Try: “It sounds like you feel sad right now and it’s really frustrating when it’s hard to work things out with your siblings.”
“I appreciate you leaving me the note telling me you’d finish cleaning your room in the morning. It’s nice to know I can depend on you.”
“I really want to hear all about your day, it sounds pretty exciting! I have to finish what I’m doing right now, but would you like it if I come and get you as soon as I’m finished so we can chat?”
Model respect and consideration. They are learning from US.
