Reading Aloud with your Kids: not a lost art!

•

Wonderful article with practical suggestions. If you have children, make the library a regular outing. Ask the librarian for suggestions on books that are funny, interesting, and exciting. Reading aloud to your children is so enjoyable when the books are not mundane. You DO NOT have to be stuck with Jack and Annie.  You can find adventurous books that both you and your child can love. It’s the same with children’s music. Ask librarians for really fun children’s music: folk, blues, jazz, etc. You don’t have to be stuck with The Wheels on the Bus. Kids who experience good books and music with their parents grow up to appreciate talent and content. Give them the morel and asparagus type of cultural experience, not the pizza and macaroni kind. You’ll find you enjoy it so much that you will mourn the night that your preteen says he doesn’t want to read at bedtime anymore. But, alas, one he’ll have his own children and pass along his love for good stories and melodies and your heart will swell!
