Strong Families, Quality #1: Appreciation and Affection.

•

Saying “thank you, I love you, I really like that shirt on you, you’re really good at that, and you are a really great guy…” can make a huge difference in our relationships.  Telling the people we care about that we like them, and love them, can inspire a domino effect of courtesy and kindness in the family.  Modeling appreciation for the little things as well as the big things sets an example for the members of the family to feel and show gratitude.  Feeling appreciated inspires us to want to do for others with an open heart and no feeling of resentment or obligation.  Strong families know that integral to family harmony is showing appreciation and affection to each family member, every day.  Strong family members feel good about themselves.  They know they are loved and they are quick to show love and kindness to others.

Challenge # 1:  Every day this week: tell each one of your family members you love and like them, but not just a simple “I love you” or “I like you.”  Find unique, personal ways to really show genuine appreciation.

Some ideas might include: “I really like our conversations in the car.  It always gets my mind working and makes the drive so much more fun.  You are a good listener.”  Or “I am always so proud to be with you when we run into people in the community.  You are such a nice person and people can really feel that you are genuinely interested in them.  What a great quality!”

Challenge # 2:  Every day this week: Find something about each family member to appreciate.  Make sure it’s sincere, and legitimate.

Possibilities:  “Thank you for helping me set the table.  It makes the job of getting dinner ready so much better.  I get to hang out with you as well as having a helping hand.  Thanks!” Or “I know I don’t say this often, but I want you to know that I really appreciate how hard you work and how much your job provides for our family.  I know there are times when you want say ‘Forget it!’ but you keep on keepin on.  We love and appreciate you so much!”

As you meet the challenges of this week, pay attention to any ripple effects.  Do you notice your family members being a little kinder to one another?  Are they showing you a little more affection and appreciation?  Do you feel happier or a little warmer inside?  I hope you do, and I’d love to hear about it.  Have a lovely, thankful week!
