The Importance of Play – for all ages

•

We all know that play is very important to child development, but did you know that “play” with mom and dad is equally important?  From birth to adulthood, our kids need us to give them at least 20 minutes a day of undivided (this means paying total attention, no phone in hand, no TV on, not while also cooking dinner, etc.) a day.  This time should consist of doing what the child wants to do, whether it be playing house, having a nerf war, doing an art project or just sitting and talking with an older child after dinner.  Giving them this undivided time sends the message that they are important and valuable to you.  I know it seems like there is no time in the day, much less 20 minutes for each child.  Life today is so busy.  But giving your kids this time and the message that you are genuinely interested in them can do loads for their self esteem and their future ability to handle disappointments and failures.  Make the time.  They’re worth it.
