Preparation, preparation, preparation
When you are going somewhere with your children, have a little game of question and answer so they know what the expectations are for their behavior in this particular setting.
Parent: “So, we are going to visit a special friend in the hospital. Does anyone know how we should act when we are in a hospital?” The children will make various suggestions and you can help them when they forget certain important things, “Yes, we use walking feet and quiet voices. Should we be wild and crazy in a hospital? No. Where can we be wild and crazy? Right! At the park or in the backyard! Would you like to visit the park after we go to the hospital?”
Always prep the kids about what is appropriate behavior for the coming setting. It helps them to be successful and makes a more pleasant trip for all.
